What Controls Cannot Fix

Controls make a reasonable arrangement more reliable. They do not create one, and they cannot substitute for the things below.

A child who will not tell you

No setting produces disclosure.

And several of the things people install reduce it, which is the central argument of this collection.

What works: not overreacting to the first difficult thing, not using what they tell you as evidence later, and honouring the no-penalty assurance the first time it is tested.

Slower than installing something, and it is the only thing that works at fifteen.

Exposure outside the house

A friend's device, a school laptop, a phone on mobile data, a relative's tablet.

Which is a substantial share of a child's actual exposure and is outside every household setting.

What works: a child who knows what to do when they are shown something, and who can say so afterwards.

Conduct between children

Bullying, exclusion, pile-ons, sharing what should not be shared.

The dominant source of actual distress, and no product addresses it.

What works: noticing, talking, the school, and making leaving a group chat acceptable.

A determined teenager

Anything can be got round with a search, and the attempt to prevent it produces the concealment.

What works: controls proportionate enough not to be worth defeating, and the effort moved to the conversation.

The parent's own anxiety

Which is real, and is frequently what is actually being bought.

A dashboard reduces the feeling of not knowing without changing what is happening, and it does so at a cost to the relationship.

What works: naming the specific worry, addressing that, and accepting that some uncertainty is a permanent condition of having a teenager.

A child in real difficulty

Self-harm, an adult in contact, extortion, serious distress.

A parental control product is the wrong instrument entirely.

What works: professional help, early, before it is clear whether it is serious enough.

Using this before buying something

For each feature, ask what would change if it worked perfectly.

Where the answer is "nothing, unless they would also tell me things", the feature is being asked to do something it cannot.

Which removes most of a product's page and leaves the parts that genuinely work: spending, accidental content, and the shape of the day.

The honest summary

Controls are good at accidental exposure in younger children, at spending at all ages, and at the rhythm of the household.

They are poor at contact risk, useless at conduct, and counterproductive when applied to teenagers at a young child's setting.

And the single most protective factor in a child's online life is that they would come and tell you, which every covert measure makes less likely.

That trade is the whole subject, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.

What this changes

Testing each feature against what would change if it worked perfectly removes most of a product page and leaves the parts that genuinely work, which are narrower and cheaper than the marketing..

The check

For anything you are about to buy, ask what would change if it worked perfectly.

Where the answer requires the child to tell you things, the product cannot deliver it.

Worth knowing
